Matches are an essential part of sports and games. Matches give rise to competitive spirit and sportsman-ship. Moreover. matches are a sort of get together where players, apart from playing and displaying their physical, stamina exchange ideas and information and have free and frank discussions among hemselves.Recently, I happened to witness a football match played between F.C. college and Government College Lahore. The match was played at the Govt. College ground. The entire ground was swept clean and then decorated. There were chairs on one side of the ground for invitees and VIPs.
The other side were open for the spectators. Both the teams were in their high spirits. They were dressed most smartly and neatly. Both were appearing equally strong. The spectators were expecting a well contested and lively game. The ground and its surroundings were jam packed by the public.
'The match started at 5 P.M. sharp. The G.C. team won the toss and chose the favourable side. Soon the referee blow the whistle and the match started. They were hopeful of scoring the goal. In the first few minutes the G.C. team dominated. They panetrated into the defences of their rival team but could not score any goal. Anyhow. their splendid performance puzzled the F.C. College team and the latter resorted to rough game. i.e. kicking ball at random. But the captain did not lose heart and encouraged his team with the result that the team was re-invigorated. The F.C. college team soon recovered their lost position and in the heat of the moment scored a goal. There was thunderous applause when the goal was scored.
The whole team was cheered by their supporters. But at the same time, the right half of G.C. team was badly injured and the right inner had to play the double role throughout the whole game. Soon the referee blew a long whistle and first half was called off.
Then the players took some rest and refreshment. There was a loud noise in the play ground as the supporters of both the teams rushed to their receptive sides in order to cheer them and encourage them.
Again the referee whistled and the match started. Now, the G.C. team girded up its loins and played with caution. The goalkeeper of G.C. team also became very alert. In the first few moments the F.0 team put pressure on the G.C. team: their left half made three hits one after another in the goal of G.C. but the goalkeeper of G.C. team showed his extraordinary skill by kicking the ball back.
Now, the game was passing through a critical stage. Each side was trying its best to score a goal but soon the time was over and it synchronizes with the scoring of a goal by F.C. team to G.C. team. This was a surprising feat which created a great sensation. The winning team received deafening cheers from its supporters while the other spectators admired the courage, and sportsman-like behaviour shown by both the teams. It was really an exciting match and the spectators appeared to have enjoyed it very much.
